South China Karst (French: Karst de Chine du Sud) is composed by Stone Forest of Yunnan, Libo Karst Region of Guizhou and WuLong Karst Park of Chongqing; among them, Stone Forest is the AAAAA national level scenic spot. It has been awarded the World National Heritage by unanimous vote on the 31 session of the World Heritage Convention on June 27, 2007. Karst namely rock dissolving landscape, it is the kind of landscape developed from the carbonate rocks mainly with limestone and dolomite. The karst area in China has characteristics as: large in area, various in landscape diversity, typical and rich in biological ecological, etc.

Distribution Terrain
China, almost every province has a different area of the distribution of limestone, karst landform widely distribution in the whole territory. The southern region of karst landform covered fifty thousand square kilometers, mostly located in Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chongqing City and some other provinces, with areas takes up to 55% of the whole China karst areas. Variety of karst topography and geomorphology shows the typical karst landform of a moist tropical and subtropical region.

Selected into World Heritage List
In 2006, "South China Karst" composed by the sword-shaped, cone-shaped and tower-shaped karst of Stone Forest in Yunnan, Forest Karst of Libo Karst Region in Guizhou and the natural stone bridge, chasm, doline of WuLong Karst Park in Chongqing is the only declaration project Chinese government declared the world natural heritage that year. The declaration area of "South China Karst" formed in the years between 500 thousand to 300 million years, the total area reaches 1,460 square kilometers, among which, the nomination (the core area) is 480 square kilometers and buffer area is 980 square kilometers. This region includes the most representative karst landform morphology of China, many attractions get a high reputation at home and abroad: Yunnan Stone Forest is famous for it is magnificent, rare, dangerous, elegant, quiet, mysterious and vast, it is called "the Essence of World’s Karst”; Guizhou Libo karst area is a gathering place of Buyi, Shui, Miao and Yao nationalities, and has once been selected in “Top 10 Chinese Beautiful Forest".

Features of the Declaration Sites
The reason of series declaration policy: South China Karst is a coherent area, its importance is generally accepted by the scientific community, includes many domestic, regional and international significant karst areas. South China Karst area is too big (more than 5 x 105), it is difficult to find one isolated area that can fully represent its karst development evolution and geomorphology diversity, so to declare in turns is quite reasonable. Although people might think each candidate area of South China Karst is qualified to be included in World Heritage List, but the series declaration policy can guarantee the chosen areas of this series region will be in a coherent framework, and can represent the landscape diversity of the entire South China Karst.

Declaration in Turns
South China Karst will declare the world natural heritage site in turns, according to the adequacy of preparation. "South China Karst" is the generic name that our national government submitted to the world heritage committee for the world natural heritage sites which will be declared in turns. In early 2006, upon the consent of the State Council, Stone Forest of Yunnan, Libo Karst Area of Guizhou and WuLong Karst region of Chongqing reported to the UNESCO's world heritage centre as "South China Karst", which is the first karst application project of South China. Wanfenglin Mountain of Guizhou, Guilin Landscape of Guangxi Xingwen Canyon Karst in Sichuan, or some other sites with sufficiet preparation, will be declared as the world natural heritage destination to UNESCO world heritage center step by step.
