The development and utilization
There is no shortage of floods while a lack of water, which will affect the agriculture seriously. However, it is rich in the underground water resources in the tropical karsts landform area whose runoff coefficient is 50-80 percent, by contrast, subtropical karsts landform is 30-40 percent and the temperate zone is 10-20 percent. As for limestone area in North China, the underground water flows out in the form of springs in the mountains, such as springs in the Beijing Yuquan Mountain, Baiquan in Hui County Henan Province, Jinci Spring in Taiyuan Shanxi, Niangzi Pass Spring and the Spouting Spring in Jinan. It makes a great sense to take full advantages of Karsts landform in the terms of industrial and agricultural development. There exist a plenty of underground rivers in South China, which can be adopted to cover the shortage of industrial and agricultural water resources by means of blocking the underground rivers with Karsts springs or drilling wells for water. The underground rivers present a ladder-like profile longitudinally, which represents abundant hydropower resources that can be utilized to build up dams and generate electricity. For example, Yunnan Province Qiubei Rokuro-dong Hydropower, it is the first hydropower which makes full uses of underground rivers in China. On the basis of the favorable conditions, Hunan Province and Guizhou Province constructed hydropower stations whose abilities to generate electricity are more than 400 kilowatts. The underground caves in the Karsts landform area always result in reservoir leakage, which is an uncertain factor to the dam body, communication lines, factories, mines and other constructions. It is the key point to ensure the successful construction of Karsts area that is to study and explore the spread of underground caves and take measures immediately. Besides, mineral deposits are easily available in Karsts area such as limestone, dolomite, marble, gypsum, rock salt and so on. There is bauxite in the Karsts erosion surface and depression deposits. Furthermore, there exist depositions of lead zinc, sulfur compounds, mercury and other placer bodies in the ancient caves and crack grudges. Underground caves are also an ideal warm bed for rich oil and gas. Thus, there locate several oil fields in the Karsts region in North China. Even some of the underground caves can be used as underground sites and underground storages.
